The haircut...

While I was away, Callum decided he had had enough of looking like this

and cut his own hair in our bathroom, to look like this

He and Lyndal were off to a wedding in Ballarat. He scrubbed up pretty well in his father's clothes and self styled hair.

I'm really pleased with the new do, it makes him look so much younger. I'm hoping it is a turning point for him in the job search.

Eency weency...

I am reminded of eency weency spider who was washed out by all the rain but then 'up came the sunshine and dried up all the rain'

We have had about 120 mls of rain in the past 5 days and everything is sodden. The Lerderderg and Werribee rivers are so swollen with nowhere for more water to go. I wanted to get a photo today of the river peaking but the car park was flooded and I couldn't get near. I was fed up with the humidity and the dampness and getting grumpier and grumpier.

But at 1230 it was like a tap had been turned off, the skies became blue with white fluffy clouds, the temperature rose along with the humidity and the rain, the streets and we all dried up. When I was sweeping water out of the garage I was sweating profusely.

The forecast is for fine weather for the next couple of days, it might begin to feel like Summer.

The rain stopped...

long enough to give us this beautiful sunset

A red sky at night is meant to be a shepherd's delight, the forecast doesn't look delightful at all. We might get another 100mls tomorrow, the 5mls in 5 minutes we had this evening caused a minor flooding in our backyard and we are nowhere near a river.

11.1.11...

the day I went back to work and struggled with this unusual date all day

the day we learned Chris' brother and his family are safe in Toowoomba but with devastation all around them

the day we had 45 mls of rain, which is quite a lot for us but nothing compared to Qld

the day I was really glad we spent last week at the beach and not this one, I wonder how much longer our friends who are still in Port Fairy will stick it out

the day a couple of nerf guns have kept children of all ages and sizes entertained for ages, these ones even have a laser target!

I swam in the ocean...

Yes thats right.

This year I went into the water 3 times on progressively hotter days. The first dip was a bit on the chilly side but I had promised Little Sister I would go in with her during their time with us.
This year the water was clear of jelly fish and seaweed. The waves were a bit inconsistent but enough for us to enjoy ourselves. Erin loves it when I get in with her but I have an issue with the whole sand/sunscreen combination, which stems from my childhood, memories of thick sunscreen being applied with sandy hands is not pleasant, so I don't go in willingly. I did enjoy it though when I gave in and being able to have a warm shower soon after the beach experience is lovely.

I do have photographic proof but that is on her camera. I also have the sand rash as evidence...

Rocks...

The coast at Port Fairy is surrounded by rocks. The breakwater, the bluff and the beach are full of rocks, much to my rock loving sisters delight.

We spent ages scrambling over these rocks and nearly circum-navigated Griffith island, where the light house is.  Erin and her cousins found lots to look at in the rock pools, discovering crabs and other sea creatures. Even the granite rocks themselves were interesting and the rock hopping wore us all out.

Little sister would have liked to have taken this one home.

The summit...

We reached the summit today...of Mount Eccles.

We hiked in the Mount Eccles National Park which has a volcanic crater filled with water.

Thanks Lochlan for taking the photo as we paused mid walk.

This included a bit of lava cave exploring. Lousie had visited the park last year and knew a torch was needed to explore the damp, pitch black cave. We all ventured in, Erin was quite hesitant as it was quite slippery with some low parts to scramble through. It was only on exiting that I realised my sunglasses had slipped off my hat during our spelunking. Lochlan went back in and found them although they are a bit squashed and lopsided now, the perfect excuse for a new pair.

The beach in Summer...

The new year...

begins for us here in Port Fairy

our home for the next 6 days. Hopefully the weather will be kind, I'm about to put on wooly socks and long pants but am determined to go for a swim in the ocean again this year.
